James High Elk, Sr., age 61, of Eagle Butte, SD, entered the Spirit World on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. An all-night wake service begins at 5:00 PM and a Prayer Services starts at 7:00 PM, Sunday October 12, 2014, at the Johnson Cultural Center, Eagle Butte, SD. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 AM, Monday, October 13, at the Johnson Cultural Center, with the Rev. Norman Blue Coat officiating. Burial will follow at the High Elk Family Cemetery, Green Grass, SD. A funeral procession will begin at 4:00 from the 4 mile junction and proceeding to the JV Cultural Center. James High Elk Sr, was born April 24, 1953 to the late Silas Sr. & Josephine High Elk. His Lakota name was “Tasunke Kuwa Akub” meaning “They’re Chasing His Horse Back” from all the horse races he won. James was born at home delivered by his great aunt Agnes (Marrowbone/Little Hawk) Butcher. Jim was a horseman, he grew up in Green Grass taming, riding and racing horses. He won many horse races held throughout the reservation, even at annual CRST Fair & Rodeo with his horse Roan or Gumbo, his pride and joy; who was a Thoroughbreed/Quarterhorse from the O'leary ranch. Jim had many names as Uncle Burnout, Jimmy Dan, Jimmy High, Jimmy (Skunk), and Big Jim. He got his name Big Jim from his late son "Baby Jim", as they had the same names & were Sr. and Jr. Jim was born to a family of 13 children with his oldest siblings Crescenthia Lavora and Emery Silas leaving in their infant stages. James was also an outdoors man that helped with wood hauling, cutting, chopping wood & hauling water from the nearby river and dam to help provide for his mother n fathers family, he spent most of the harsh winters outdoors. He joined the Marines and went through Boot Camp in San Diago, CA on December 15, 1971 and graduated on March 15, 1972. He married Sara InAmongst and had their first child Kelli Elizabeth in February of 1972 in Dallas, Texas. He was stationed in Okinawa, Japan and was discharged from the Marines on November 25, 1975. They had Kelli, Jim Jr. High Elk & one daughter, Jamilyn InAmongst-High Elk. After living in Texas, they returned back to South Dakota and resided in the communities of Bullhead presently known as Rock Creek, SD and Red Scaffold, SD with his family. He lost Baby Jim in 2005 and Kelli in 2011. He married Salina (Steele) High Elk, to this marriage, they had Jonathan, Justin, Brittany High Elk and two step children Stephanie and Jeremy Hollow. They resided in the community of Isabel, SD where their children went to school and graduated from the Isabel High School. They lost Brittany on February, 25, 2004 and Jonathan on June 15, 2008. His grandson Julian Charger said “I've always enjoyed going to see him to have coffee and smoke cigarettes. Grandpa always had a smile or something nice to say. I never did see my grandpa in a bad mood. Most of the time that I went to see my Grandpa he always used to tease me when I would go and visit him. Jim was a humble soul, always laughing, teasing, joking, in high spirit, although he suffered a lot of pain from his crippling Rhuematism, he had a heart as big as his soul. His door was open to the homeless, those without families/extended families. Jimmy was a great friend, brother, cousin, uncle, but most of all he was the GREATEST GRANDPA in the world. He will be missed terribly by all his family and friends. Jim is survived by his wife Salina (Hollow) High Elk, son Justin High Elk, McLaughlin, SD, his daughter, Jamilyn InAmongst-High Elk of Eagle Butte, SD., step-daughter, Stephanie Hollow, Rapid City, SD & step-son Jeremy Hollow, Mclaughlin, SD. Grandchildren, Julian Charger, Eagle Butte, SD. Jazmyn, Yazmeen, T'Linn, Nizhoni & Braxton George, Ganado, AZ. Darwyn Standing Bear, Eagle Butte, SD. Step-grandchildren: Kayla Hollow, Kiawana Frazier & JuliAnne Bruguier, Rapid City, SD. His brothers: Arlee (Delores Bowker) High Elk, Silas High Elk II, Green Grass, SD. Sisters: Suella High Elk, Green Grass, SD, Salina High Elk, Eagle Butte, SD, Vivian High Elk, Green Grass, SD, Elnora Buffalo, Hobbema, Alta-Canada, Twila High Elk, Timber lake, SD, Betty (Petr) Skaroupka, Green Grass, SD, Mary (Dean) Lopez, Wooster, Ohio, adopted family, Merle Whistler, Kyle, SD, Dennis & Dave Dansforth, Onieda, WI, Joy Circle Eagle, Eagle Butte, SD, Deanna (Richard) Provost, Martin, SD, Lori (Russell) Price, Rapid City, SD, Alice (Simon) Frazier, Dupree, SD, Bernadine (Kenny) Little Thunder, Red Scaffold, SD, Lynn Provost, Bear Creek, SD, Irene (Martin) LaChuga, Green Grass, SD. Preceding him in death are: Kelli High Elk, Jim High Elk Jr., Jonathan High Elk, Brittany High Elk, LaVora High Elk, Tara High Elk, Sugar Buffalo, Carol High Elk, Angel Mestes, Christopher and Ashley LeBeau, Emery & Crescenthia Lavora High Elk, his mother Josephine (Straight Head) High Elk & Silas High Elk Sr. Funeral arrangements have been placed in the care of Rooks & Red Dog Funeral Home of Eagle Butte.
